When To Fertilize Your Lawn

Tips On When To Fertilize Your Lawn

Why Lawn Fertilization Is Important

The perfect conditions:  just the right mixture of sunshine, temperature, and rainfall over consistent periods of time and a naturally weedless lawn. With these, you just might have a beautifully green, lush lawn grow all on its own.

But when was the last time you saw a consistent period of weather of any kind, let alone the perfect conditions for maintaining a beautiful lawn? I don’t remember either.

To achieve the kind of lawn people will stare at as they drive by you’re going to need a little help. This is where fertilization comes in.

Fertilizing in of itself though isn’t the only factor to consider to get this kind of lawn. Knowing when to fertilize your lawn is just as important to maximize the benefits of this process.

Here’s a brief guide to figuring out the best time to fertilize your lawn.

Let the Weather Tell You When to Fertilize Your Lawn

One great way to maximize the benefits of lawn fertilization is to plan this treatment around rainfall.
You’ll want your lawn to be nice and moist when the fertilizer hits. Ideally, you’ll want your lawn to get watered a day or so before fertilizing. If you want to get really into it, you can get down and (literally) dirty by checking if enough rain has fallen to get to your grass’ roots. Healthy grass root systems go down about six inches into the soil, so just dig down a little way and check if the soil is moist this deep. If not, it may need more rainfall or watering before fertilizing.Just as important, if not more so, as your lawn getting watered before fertilization is this happening afterward.

This later watering is going to have a two-fold effect. First, it will dissolve the fertilizer, allowing it to mix into the soil. Secondly, it will wash the fertilizer off the blades of grass into the soil where the grass’ nourishment-soaking root system is.

Just one brief note–right before a heavy rainfall is not when to fertilize your lawn, as this could actually have the negative effect of washing the fertilizer away.

Let the Type of Grass Tell You When to Fertilize Your Lawn
Different species of grass grow in different climates. Depending on the type of climate a specific species grows in, it is going to be classified differently.

Here in Colorado, every species of grass growing in your lawn is going to be classified as a cool season grass. These types of grasses grow optimally grow between temperature ranges of 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Generally, it’s recommended that these grass species get fertilized once per year in the fall time. This fall time fertilization is responsible for quick growth of a lush, green lawn the following spring.
